T-Roy, is a versatile, openly gay singer/songwriter from Yonkers, New York. T-Roy has chosen to revise neoclassic soul music and it has been said that his creations have renewed, entertained and educated many old school Beboppers and Hip Hoppers with its extraordinary blend of sweet melodies, honest lyrics, and romantic grooves.
The development of his unique style is the result of a lifetime of musical influences and encounters. Growing up in New York, T-Roy was always surrounded by different forms of music and culture. His father was a bass player/singer and his stepfather was also a bass player, the senior members of his family exposed him to a wealth of music as a child, all of which influenced his development.
Scattered thoughts about himself as a teenager and the experiences of his friends and family gave rise to his first attempts at songwriting. Over time, these thoughts expanded to include commentary on the world at large. These observances would eventually become unfinished poems set to music. T-Roy found his social and entertainment groove in hip-hop and decided to compose and sing, a decision from which he has never looked back.
T-Roy is keen to point out that everything he listens to and experiences drives his musical development in some way. However, he would certainly include Fela Kuti, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Anita Baker, John Coltrane, Stevie Wonder and Annie Lennox among his biggest influences. He has also garnered inspiration from his travels through the United States, Morocco, Belize, Spain, France, Mexico, Italy, England, and Brazil.
T-Roy’s musical journey did not begin as a singer/songwriter. He started his career in the entertainment business as a modern dancer later exploring ballet, tap, and jazz. At that time there were no classes in hip hop dance and no true recognition of the art form. In those days, his classroom was the streets of New York City, an education which eventually led to evening dinner theater and performances at Alice Tully Hall in New York City.
T-Roy’s music traces the emotional passage of relationships experienced over the course of his extraordinary life. The songs provide a combination of intimate lyrical ability, well-constructed orchestration, and mellow vocals. The rhythmic undercurrent is an affirmation of his honesty and growth, punctuated throughout with elements of African Rhythm, hip-hop, house, jazz, pop, and R&B.
Enjoy the journey of getting to know T-Roy through song.
